Biography

The music of Carlo Filipe has the goal of revealing intersections between distinct styles and cultures from a Brazilian perspective.

Carlo was born in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, and after a prolific collaboration with Orquestra Brasileira de Guitarras (OBG), expanded his music curiosity by creating Tastho, an electric guitar trio that combines contemporary jazz with Brazilian traditional styles, under polyphonic arrangements.

After releasing his solo album Caldo, Carlo went to the UK where he deepened his research about multiculturalism in music, accomplishing MA and PhD in Music.

As an educator Carlo has been teaching music theory, guitar, composition, History of Music in public and private conservatoires, seminars and workshops in Brazil and the UK.

Biography

Carlo  was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1969, guitarist, composer, and educator Carlo Filipe graduated in Music (guitar) at Universidade Estácio de Sá. Member of Orquestra Brasileira de Guitarras (OBG) for 9 years (1992 to 2001), Carlo participated as composer arranger and performer in 2 cds (Orquestra Brasileira de Guitarras and Amálgama) and toured with OBG the main cities of Brazil. 

In 1997 Carlo created Tastho Guitar Trio, aiming to present music that combines classical music procedures with improvisation over Brazilian traditional styles. Tastho released in 2001  Sambaqui, a cd with his arrangements for songs by great Brazilian guitarists who also played in the album (Guinga, Toninho Horta, Zé Menezes, Flavio Goulart e Yuri Popoff), alongside his compositions. The project was praised in several specialised media vehicles such as Guitar Player, Cover Guitarra, O Globo, Blues ‘n’ Jazz. 

 

Carlo also worked as arranger for chamber music groups of UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) between 1998 and 2000.

 

In 2008 Carlo has recorded his first solo album (Caldo) for Ethos Brasil, deepening his interest in combining elements from different styles and to bring a polyphonic ambience to Brazilian Jazz.

 

Duos, trios and solos show emphasis in a chamber music approach. In the repertoire, reimagined Brazilian standards (by (Pixinguinha, Chico Buarque, Djavan, Edu Lobo, Hermeto Pascoal, Toninho Horta, Waldir Azevedo) and his pieces. In some of them his guitar dialogues with a string quartet. Carlos Malta, Paulo Russo, Robertinho Silva, Flavio Goulart and Paulo Sergio Santos apear as special guests.  

 

Between 2013 and 2019 Carlo lived in the UK, where he accomplished a MA and a PhD in Jazz Performance and Composition at The University of York with his investigation of a multicultural approach to make music. During this time, Carlo had the chance to collaborate with artists such as John Taylor,  Julian Argüelles, Mike Walker, Steve Watts, Nikki Iles; and presenting concerts and workshops in York, London and Rome.

 

The music of Carlo Filipe pursues the goal of uncovering intersections between distinct musical styles (from traditions that share the use of improvisation) throughout a Brazilian perspective.
